I will be babysitting my grandson and I only own a madza pick up truck (bench style) There are no air bags on that side so I know I can put a car seat there but can anchors be put in or is it safe enough with the seat belt. My children used their car seats with belts only so I don't think it should be a problem but if anyone knows for sure please let me know.

thank you

  1. No it does not have to have anchors, and no, they can not be installed. You can have a tether anchor installed, you hook a strap that comes out of the back of the seat to it (for forward facing seats) though it is not required for most seats.

Seatbelts are just as safe as LATCH. LATCH is not safer than seatbelts: it was invented to be more convenient and universal, though it has somewhat failed on both counts b/c of the differences between vehicle makers and car seat manufacturer's ideas of LATCH.

More important is making sure he is in an age appropriate car seat.

1)rear facing: keep kids rear facing as long as possible! turning them forward at 20lbs and 1 year is a bad idea

2)once they outgrow a rear facing convertible seat by reaching the limit, keep them forward facing in a 5 point harness as long as possible before using a booster

  2. Just the seat belt is fine. I have a ranger without air bags and I put my son backwards in his carseat with just the belt. They'll be fine.
