  1. I tink da last time somebody warshed dem would determin dat!!!

  2. Rats don't smell if you keep their cage clean. The males may pee everywhere to mark their teritory but if u clean their bedding every day they won't smell. If it still bothers u u can buy an odor removing spray to put in the cage that can help.

  3. First off, if you are looking to get a rat, please make sure you are getting two rather than one. Rats are social animals that need a companion.  Two are no harder to care for than one and there are studies that have been conducted that show that rats are healthier, happier and less stressed when housed with a companion.

Males do tend to smell more than females do and this is due to their scent marking and their production of "buck greece".  If you clean the cage regularly and do a full cage clean once a week with some vinegar and a cleaning agent safe for small animals, the cage smell shouldn't be much of a problem.  An open box of baking soda by the cage does wonders for the smell as well.  Neutered males don't smell as much as unaltered males as the scent marking is cut down as is the buck greece produced.

Males aren't always better companions. It depends on the rat.  The best companion rat I've had was a female.  She bruxxes and boggles while cuddling in my lap.  My other female is quite affectionate as well while my males are more the explorers of the group.  Age also plays a part.  Young rats no matter the gender will be more on the go than their older selves will be.  Rather than deciding on the gender to determine which would be "best" as a companion rat, concentrate more on where you will get them from.  Breeders will be able to adopt out rats that have been hand raised and are used to human companionship.  Pet store rats will need more work and have not been bred for health or temperament so these rats may die faster or have more temperament or health issues.  Check out petfinder.com in your area if you do not have a breeder.  This is better than supporting rat mills at a pet store and you will be giving two rats a home that they wouldn't have had otherwise.  I got two of my kiddos through a rescue and it was the best thing I've ever done. I adore them.

Please feel free to email me if you have any further questions. Good luck!

  4. Male rats definitely smell more! And rats are excellent companions, as long as you can devote a lot of time to them. They need company, so either have it with you all day (ours used to ride on our shoulders) or get a companion of the same s*x. Try to make sure they get along, first.

I don't know what kind of rat you've been looking at, but white feeder rats are probably not a good idea. All pet rats have very short lives, but feeder rats die even faster since there's no care in their breeding. See if you can find a fancy breeder near you. We had rats with siamese markings, fawn markings, curly fur, silky fur, you name it! They do tend to get cancer, so be prepared to have your pet put to sleep in just a few years. If you have any questions about keeping rats, I have an answer!

  5. i had a female rat and she was gr8 would play with you and sleep in your pocket and in your lap. the male rat i had tended to bite. as long as the cage is cleaned regualrly i don't think there much difference in the smell

  6. well, all animals smell. it just dependds on how the rat grooms itself. if it is happy-go-lucky all the time, it will keep up its grooming. if you fail, however, to keep it so, then the grooming will fail.

females and males are great companions. well, almost all rats are. they all ave their ups, donws, and different personalities to determin that. yes, females might be a little more, tempermental, but males are more terrritorial.

people say females don't sit still, i beg to differ. people also say that males are more gentle. that depends on how you treat him.

i think females. they have their on-and-off days, but they still are more gentle when that couple days have passed (except when you breed. that depends on how you approach her)

get whatever you desire most. what gender you fall in love with, the one that catches your eye, go for it. they turn out to be loving litttle critters that you can hold and carry around and just show off to people.

    <3 good luck finding him/her

  7. Think of it this way. Cage pets pee and p**p in the house and most people wait a week to clean it up. Of course they all smell. I don't think my males smell worse than my females, but I clean up more often.

  8. yes males do smell more than females and they are not as active, so it depends if you want an active rat or a more chilled out one. please dont just get one rat, get 2, as they enjoy company, get 2 of the same s*x that are already living together, preferably brothers or sisters.

  9. Male rats can smell more but they're pee has hardly any smell whilst a doe doesn't smell much but they're pee smells worse than a bucks so it really evens itself out.

  10. yea the males do stink a little more but give it a bath and it will be fine same with a female.

  11. Yes male rats do stink ALOT more than female rats, male rats are generally more lazy and smell more than girly rats, but some people say male rats are better to own than females.  females are smaller than the male, smell less and can learn things better! So either of them are great, just a warning though, males do really stink!! But then females can be more skittish...

Hope this helps and you get the perfect rat!!

  12. rats r very clean n they dont smell very much but guy rats smell slightly more coz they scent mark more than gals.

    p.s. u need to get 2 ratties

  13. Yes, they do. They scent mark. They have a natural 'perfume' too, although some may argue that it doesn't smell very perfume-y. It's different for each rat, though.

Anyway, if you keep the cage clean, either gender won't stink too much.

  14. They both stink something awful if you don't keep their cages scrupulously clean (and that means cleaning up EVERY day).
