Does a metal band need a distortion for bass?

hi i have a band that plays rock/metal and i was wondering if the metal songs need a distortion on bass.

No. Eq or modulation effects (chorus, flanger, phaser, ring modulator, etc) are good, but distortion should only be used if it serves the song.

No, I am a bass player...I reccoment swr amps red series...

you can get an octave pedal and it will give some cool effects...also the chourus pedal is good too
