  1. The only rifle I've fired that compared to a 12 ga. with magnum slugs, was a .375 H&H Magnum, and I'm pretty sure that the 7.62X54 Mosin has no where near the recoil of a Mag 12 load.

  2. Are you asking because you have one firearm or the other as a frame of reference?

If memory serves the M 590 is a gas operated semi auto. Most came with a factory recoil pad. If the stock fits you well for drop, you tuck it into your shoulder and get your head on the stock ... just about anyone could shoot it without too much discomfort.

Same goes for the Russian rifle...7x54 should have recoil levels in the .30-30 to 30-06 class. The stock shape may not be pleasant for some folks. Tuck, get your "wood" on the wood...relax and let the recoil roll ya. Mausers and !903 Springfeild and Enfeilds all recoil at around the same level

shooting from a bench is a little harder than offhand too. shotguns shot from the bench will feel a lot tougher than when shot standing-offhand...rifles too

  3. lots off variables there . . . depends on the grain of the bullet and the amount of powder used in the 7.62. The weight and balance of the rifle/shotgun and accessories plays a major part in the equation. It could really go either way depending on the set up. In general semi autos have a reduced kick, because they utilize some of the excess gas pressure to force the bolt back and eject the spent cartridge. Then again the semi auto shotgun does the same thing . . .

  4. Yes, I'd say so.  Now the 7.62x54R cartridge is very similar to the 30-06, as far as power and recoil and all that.  Part of the reason the M44 kicks so hard is that the gun is short.

But still, a top-of-the-line slug, like a 3 inch magnum buckhammer, that is going to recoil HARD

Of course, if you use 2 3/4th slugs, you can fit one more round in the chamber, and still have power to spare.

May police departments buy 'tactical' slugs and buckshot, but that is code for 'low recoil'

It all works out fine, because even using 2 3/4th 'low recoil' slugs and buckshot, you are still delivering massive amounts of energy on target

here are some recoil tables.  You want to look at the column marked "Recoil Energy" the higher that number, the harder the kick.

Also note that while this chart has 7.62x54R, it is for a 9 pound rifle, which is the weight of the full length mosin, not the carbine M44 variant

  5. the mossberg

  6. I have fired them both..... The Mossberg 590 pump shotgun loaded with a 3 inch cartridge either buckshot or slugs has a lot more recoil.... The Mosin Nagant has a bit of recoil but nothing like a 3 inch slug from a pump shotgun....

  7. It depends. An M44 or M38 is short and has a very tough metal butt-plate. That causes more recoil.

If the shotgun has a nice rubber pad, then the Mosin might get the award for more recoil. But most of the time I'd say they don't.

  8. The mossberg 590 gives a noticeably stronger "kick"

  9. A slug will have more kick but a mosin will hurt more because all you got is that small steel buttplate at your shoulder. A shotgun still has that pad. I have an m44 and a 500. I can say the slugs have more kick.
