  1. About as much as any other injection. I get them all the time. I have to have B 12 injections into the muscle. All you have to do to keep it from hurting so bad is relax the muscle that is getting injected. Turn your head and think of something pleasant. The key to being painless is relaxing the muscle, don't tighten up just before they stick you. Pretend they are not going to stick you and you are just standing there. I've had tons of injections. When I trained for my paramedic license we stuck each other and drew blood from each other. Relaxing keeps the pain away.

  2. It mostly depends on how it is done, the skill of the person doing it.  I'm like you, I HATE needles but if you just relax and let them do it, it never hurts as much as you thought it would. Needles today are smaller around, they are sharper and they're even coated with a sort of 'teflon' that lubricates them so you don't feel them as much.

You know, when you get a shot in the arm (or in the butt!) that's called IM, intra-muscular.  The person is aiming for the muscle.  So it's just like that only in a different place.

Just relax.  It will go better than you expect.  If you get all tense and lose sleep over it, it will just be that much worse.
