Does a new laptop automatically connect to a wireless connection?

I know nothing about wireless connections. I have a new laptop. Will it automatically pick up the connection if I take it to a hot spot, or is there something I need to do to enable it?

You need to search for the hotspot wireless, then set the encryption key and connect.

yes you will see the connection, then you'll have to choose to connect to it, you will probably have to then pay to get past the initial connection screen, read more below so you don't get scammed connecting to wifi hotspots, as there are some nasty scams around.
