Does a power line network work well over two floors?

I'm planning on setting up a power line network to connect my XBOX 360 to my home network.

My 360 is downstairs, and my router is upstairs. So if I have one end of the power line network hooked up to the router upstairs, and the other end hooked up to the 360 downstairs, will the connection be strong enough?

  1. Powerline networking can work quite well.  The are a few things to look out for however.  Probably the biggest problem you might run into is having the two end adapters on different "legs" of a 2 or 3 phase power system.  Looks like you are in Canada so not sure if this appies to you but US residential power is usually 2x120v (2 phase) from the transformer.  That means if your two adapters were on different legs, then the signal would have to travel up to the pole and come back down.  There is an easy solution however, if you have a 220/240v socket in the house (like for a dryer or stove/oven) then you can get one of these phase couplers:
