Question:

Does a "repairable write-off" REVS check result mean bad news?

I just bought a car and of course before I made the purchase I asked the seller for the VIN and engine number to do a REVS check. It seemed ok, but when I'd bought it and just double-checked with the numbers on the registration slip, I got a different result because he'd told me "m" where there was an "n", and now the REVS check says the vehicle is listed as a "repairable write-off". The car seems safe and in good condition, and shows no signs of structural damage. But could there be unresolved insurance issues outstanding? Does it mean trouble? Or am I worrying needlessly?

  1. Unless the title is stamped "SALVAGE" there are no particular issues to worry about.  It only means there was something that cost more to fix than the value of the car at one time, but it wasn't anything that made the car unsafe, therefor the "repairable".  Doesn't take much these days to have a very costly repair.  A slight bump to a bumper can lead to a replacement bumper and a paint job to match the car.

    Enjoy your car.
