Does a regular vs. a stiff shaft really make a difference?

For a driver/fairway woods, does a regular vs. stiff shaft make a difference.

I swing about 90-95mph.....but when I am hitting it on the driving range, I swing faster at about 95-100mph.

I use regular shafts for my irons, because I have a slower swing with my irons.

which shaft type should I get with my driver?

thanks

  1. invest the time to visit a range or course during a demo-day and try manufacturers club with a variety of shafts.

Not only will you find what you need, you might be suprised by the answer.

  2. Getting the right shaft is very important.  I would much rather use heads that I do not prefer with the proper shaft for me as opposed to using heads that love with improper shafts for my swing.  Controlling ball flight in reagrds to trajectory is greatly influenced by the shaft that you use.  There is nothing worse than hitting it pure only to watch the ball baloon.

  3. Sounds liek you need to work on making your swing more consistent than worrying about shaft flex.  If you are swinging faster on the range than you do on the course...what exactly are you practicing?

  4. There should be very little difference in the way one swings woods as compared with irons. The shafts should be relatively the same. Your swing speed on the course of 90-95 mph indicates the need of a regular shaft. The flex should be consistent throughout your set.

  5. i'd say go with a stiff flex.

It will add yards to your drives and also keep it straighter.

  6. The short answer - yes it does make that much of a difference, but also agree with jseid - everyone should swing at a facility with a variety of clubs, brands, styles and tech to figure out the right set for you.

The proper clubs can literally mean a 10 point handicap swing or more.

  7. regular shafts, is the easy answer. the best suggestion is to go to a facility and hit several shots with the same club, but different shafts.  You best results come when you do not know which shaft is which when you are swinging them.

  8. Stiff shafts range from 125-155mph and that is what i have to use but for 90-100 you should use regular shafts. The difference between stiff and regular is the amount of bend, the more bend the more slice but they only bend when you swing over the amount indicated.  A little bend is wanted, because it drives the ball farther and keeps you in the game with the other people who drive it 280 yards plus.
