Question:

Does a serve have to hit the center line, or can it be good beyond it?

If a serve hits the the continuation of the center service line, but not the like itself, is it still good? The reason I ask is because the line judge cannot tell where the line ends. They can give the good sign to a serve that is long.

I have added an illustration of the situation I'm talking about. I did not see anything in the rules about this. In my pic, the green is the contact mark the ball left, like you would see on hawkeye. The gray line is the continuation of the center line, which is not visible on a real court, but I put it for reference. The serve is from the deuce court. Please do not reply unless you understand my question, and cite a source if possible. Thanks!

  1. That would be out, it'd be wide.  The line judge would see that, because he/she would be sitting on the center line.

Imagine, in your picture that the green spot is touching the alley farther to the right, would it be out?  Of course it would be out

so this is just a case of it being really close, but still out.

  2. Well from your illustration it looks really close but I believe it actually has to touch a part of the center line. The mark looks really close to the very upper right corner of the box but it does not actually touch the center line so it is out.
