anytime you take out a board you should put some wax on it. even if it is a soft top  or sponge board bz board.

Softops are great boards for youngsters to learn on. They are big, floaty, cheap and durable. When the board smacks you in the face, it doesn't do the damage a real surfboard will. My 7 year old granddaughter rides a nice little 6'6" softtop. There is some debate about whether or not to wax 'em. We do not wax her board, and she has plenty of traction. I have rented a couple softops to teach nieces and nephews on, and I have waxed them. The wax doesn't hurt, but I don't see that it significantly improved the traction. If you have one, try it without wax for a few sessions. If you need to improve traction, wax it up with wax for the appropriate water temp. Because of its spongy surface, I would skip the base coat wax.

you really should wax it, but it depends on whatever you feel comfortable doing. wax makes it easier to find your footing when you get up and to stay on, but it can be a pain as well in getting it off and applying evenly. but i think u will do much better and stay on more rides if you wax it

For soft top surfboards, no, you don't need wax.  There's enough traction from the spongy material used for the deck/ top. Plus having wax on a sponge board reeks of "kook".  Not that a sponge board doesn't make you stick out, but at least for beginners, a soft top is much safer for everyone.

A quick side-note, soft top boards are great for surfing with your pet dog too!  The pads on their feet tend to grip MUCH better on a softboard.  Plus wax gets nasty on a dog's fur.

they don't need the wax but i waxed my friends since her soft top board was giving her a rash apparently the wax helps. =]
