Does a stihl chainsaw ms390 cylinder and piston fit right on a ms290 chainsaw and are the carbs the same?

  1. The engine block (piston, jug, crankshaft, and crank pan) will fit in the MS290 housing.  No, the carbs are different, and you might need to change the top cover as some MS390 have a decompression valve, and earlier ones don't.  The handles, the tank housing, and several other parts are the same.  You might also want to use the chain sprocket for the MS390, as it uses a 3/8" pitch chain, and the MS290 uses the smaller .325" chain.
