Many audiophiles will tell you that its better on a hardwood floor. If you have a carpeted floor, however, you can purchase "carpet spikes" that "penetrate" through the carpet and carpet pad, which are supposed to help the vibrations of the sub reverberate throughout the floor. These attach to the bottom of your sub and concentrate the vibrations into the four points that contact the floor.They do not need to actually puncture your carpet, however, so don't worry about damage to your floor.

i think the harder the surface the better, because they put a piece of cardboard under mine when they installed it
