I am really interested in surgical technology, but, I want to have a career that really helps people in many ways. I read in one article that surgical techs "do not enjoy working with patients." That's not true for me! While I won't have much time with a patient, I think that I can help them feel better and less afraid. What do y'all think?

  1. Anyone involved in healthcare in some way is involved with patients and families.  Your skills and talents in providing competent and compassionate care are needed and appreciated.

The "do not enjoy working with patients" piece might be another example of "not believing everything you read".

Good luck to you and I know patients will appreciate a kind and caring person no matter who you are.

  2. I don't understand why someone who do a job helping people if its not what they enjoy. Most people take jobs within the health care system because they love helping people. I believe if helping people is what you like to do and if you are truly devoted to helping people and being a surgical technologist then go for it and good luck.

  3. It's important that a surgical tech be caring and compassionate. Granted, most of the time you're working with them, the patients will be unconscious or groggy from the anesthesia, but before the surgery, they will be awake. And they will often be nervous or scared, and that's when it can really help to have a compassionate person helping them prep for surgery and taking them there.

It is a fact that patient attitude can affect the outcome of the surgery. If the surg tech is friendly, reassuring and gentle, they're going to be calmer and have a better surgical experience than if the last person they see before going under is cold, impatient and condescending.

Also, your good, caring attitude can help the surgeons and nurses feel positive, too. So this is important, and if this isn't the way many surg techs are, then you are really needed!

  4. This is for ANYONE who does not like/enjoy working with people--Get a work at home job! Anyone that has to be seen by a Surgical technian has enough worries of their own without having to be around a rude OGRE!
