  1. No, and this is really a ridiculous question. If this is in all seriousness, please go out and at least buy a parenting book, if not take a class. For the sake of your child or children.

  2. What?

    You don't ground a 3 1/2 year old.

    Jeez people.

Put him or her in a time out the moment something bad happens.

If you punish them a day after, they already forgot what they did and think that your just punishing them just to do it.

  3. no, that is ridiculous!  generally at that age they are supposed to be punished for the same number of minutes as they are old. so he/she should get a 3 minute time out and then talk to her about why they were punished and get an apology and a hug.

  4. Yes they do!!! LOL I have a 3 1/2 yr old too and I know she does understand that she was "grounded" or not allowed to do whatever for bad behavior the previous day! However, we do not extend punishments for more than a day. The taking away of the item ends when the sun comes up the next day, because although they understand it the impact loses affect after that long. If the action is repeated the next day you could say something like "remember yesterday when you werent allowed to "watch TV" because you did this behavior....remember that...well you did it again and that is wrong so we wont be watching TV again today"

I think the important thing in punishments such as grounding is to make sure the punishment is the same for each offense...dont clean your room then you cant play with your toys...for each offense of not cleaning the room...that way they see a correlation between the punishment and the offense! if that makes any sense LOL

P.S. I guess it really depends on the development of the child as well. My daugher is EXTREMELY bright and much more advanced in her intellectual and emotional development than the average three year old...which is why I believe she is able to understand this concept a little better than most 3 1/2 yr olds!

  5. It depends on the child.  Some kids would remember, some wouldn't.  But with any child, misbehavior should be addressed when it happens and punished accordingly.  The key is consistency and always explaining what the child did wrong, why it is wrong, and the behavior expected next time.  A good way to help them remember is standing in a corner or sitting in a designated time out area and having them repeat what not to do over and over for 1 minute for each year of their age. (ex:  "I will not hit my sister" or whatever the offense was)

  6. You should have punished him/her right after it happened not the next day. But if you explained to the child that they did something wrong and they should not do that again.

I think  you should explain what they did wrong and tell him/her that next time you will be punished and be firm about that fact.

It gets a little unclear about right and wrong after a lot of time has passed.

    Good luck with this.

  7. No, a three year old doesn't have the mind of an adult, a three year old has the mind of a small child.  What he did the previous day has been forgotten so grounding him today for something he did yesterday is going to confuse him at best and be resentful that he is being punished for nothing at worst.  He is a small child not a miniature adult.

  8. no they do not

  9. no you need to punish a child as soon as they do something.children have short memories.

  10. no.  at 3.5 they need to be punished or talked to immediately after they have misbehaved or it will not do any good... they will not understand.

grounding is not a good punishment for a 3.5 year old either... time outs work well...use a minute per age...

grounding may start to work when the child is old enough and has some freedom to come and go as they please...

    best wishes!
