Does a thumbs down on YA mean " I don't agree with your answer" or "I don't like you"?

hislady...No..It wasn't about the "rules"...I wanted to know what was going on in our neck of the woods...why I get thumbs down when ..for example..I give a Yes answer & then tell them to go to Resolved for more info. ..and it's called "not an answer. " I'm still talking to YA about it..but I don't understand why anyone would report that anyway. (BTW..as you can tell..it wasn't only thumbs down for this.) So it makes me believe it's more than disagreeing. It definitely wasn't a rude answer.

  1. It can mean either one or many more things

  2. Hi Deenie,

After carefully reading your question I surmise the following:

Please do not allow the village idiots to set the tone of your day. it is obvious that if all Yahoo Q&A participants were on your level, there would be no need for thumbs up or down.

Some of these people do not have a life and survive on pounding on a keyboard as a means of existence.

If you could see yourself as I have perceived you today, you would absolutely ignore the thumbers and consider the source as they seem to have the ya, ya, ya, I'm telling on you, attitude and the sad part is, most of them are supposed to be, by age levels, adults but I don't think so.

In conclusion, your question speaks of your intellectual level and as I always say, you cannot gage a persons intellect by their answers, but rather as you so aptly display, by your questions.

It was an honor for me to have participated in submitting my humble opinion in response to your question.

You are a good person, do not let the thumbers spoil your day.

    Sincerely,

    Darryl S.

  3. yeh it could mean both things but more than likely it means that people dont agree with your answer because how can people not like you when they dont know anything about you or what you look like or anything like that so hope i could help

  4. It means kinda both. And as being reported! I got few of those too. But for sure from those kind of peoples which aren't much nice, even to themselves, I bet?

  5. I'll usually thumbs down answers that are silly, stupid, misleading or mean.Even then most of the time I don't bother. It has to be pretty extreme. In your case I like you.I know how much it bothers you.So I'd never do it to you.By the way, there's nothing I like better then a load of thumbs down. The worst thumbs downers don't even read the answers. That's how they say"I don't like you".

  6. I give out many more thumbs up than thumbs down. If I do give someone thumbs down, it's usually because the answer is just plain mean. If I had the option I would give some answers a finger up.

  7. Perhaps there should be a third option: the 'finger'. That would be reserved for those mean or totally off base responses.

  8. it means someone doesn't like your answer at least from my point of vu and YOU HUNTING YOU don't talk like that about Dennie and yeah all answers that i saw coming from you sucked

  9. It could mean either of those things. It could also mean "Your answer is totally mental and I think you really need some psychological help pronto, but I can't say that without getting reported so I'll just thumbs down you".

Edit: Hey, I didn't necessarily mean Deenie with the above. There are more than a few people here who give answers that really make you wonder how deluded they've become. If the thumb fits...

  10. I think it generally means that people don't agree with your answer.  There are so many people on here, it would be unlikely to get singled out by somebody to the point where they went around and gave you a bunch of thumbs downs just because they don't like you, not to mention that would be pretty immature.

  11. i think its mostly... i don agree with your answer. i do it when i disagree or when someone gives a silly answer just to get 2 points..

  12. For me, thumbs down means that I thought the answer was mean.Such as a personal attack.  I wouldn't take any of this too personally.  I haven't given any thumbs down, because answers are mostly opinion.

  13. either

  14. Some people are spiteful, others have opinions, but if I am to "thumb up" or "thumb down" a person it will have to do with whether the answer follows the following criteria...

    1) Does the answer pertain to the question?

    2) Is the answer logical (or merely argumentative)?

    3) In case of Math and Science questions, is it right?

If it passes all the criteria it gets an up, if it fails all it gets a down.

There are some questions that don't warrant a response, and there are some people who ask Rhetorical or questions in order to find people who agree with them (Politics/Religion).

I don't agree with a lot of people, but it would never occur to me to give them a "thumbs down" for their answer, if it makes sense.

  15. I think it depends on the person. I mean, I get thumbs down just because people don't like me or because they disagree with my answer (and you can tell this when you get a thumbs down for an answer that was just your opinion). It would be interesting to know what it was intended for.

I personally give thumbs down for answers that are rude and thumbs up for thoughtful answers, especially those who strongly disagree with someone, but say it in a nice manner. You should see if they have a YA section somewhere and ask.

  16. As I've said before, I give thumbs up to those I agree with, nothing to those I am neutral toward and thumbs down to all answers I disagree with.  My thumbs are directed at the answer, not the person.

  17. It could mean anything the thumber really wants it to mean. There's no way for you to know.

Regarding myself, I'll thumbs down an answer if I think it is wrong and misleading. I'll thumbs up any answer I think is on the right track, no matter who posted it, believer or skeptic. Thumbs are a harmless way of voicing your opinion.

  18. No hard feelings, just matters of opinion that's what makes YA appealing

  19. Sometimes I give thumbs down to obnoxious answers, answers that don't answer the question, and answers that make me say "what the hel..?" and waste time to read.  That is few and far between, because I don't remember who says what, so it's never a personal thing.
