  1. RioJade is right:  in the USA they are NOT the same thing, but in some countries a thumbs-up is the same as flipping someone off...you're just using a different finger.  :-)

    Also, the thumb-out for hitch-hiking is fine in the USA, but is considered rude in a lot of other countries, including some of Europe.  If you hitch-hike overseas, hold out an index finger or palm instead.


  2. Not generally, but it depends on what country you are in. The thumb's up is really rude in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries. Thumb''s up in Brazil means "yes" or "okay", same as in the USA.

  3. it used to mean that back in the Elizabethan Era, like during the times when Shakespeare first wrote Romeo and Juliet.

    Thumbs up means that's great (i.e. GOOD) and flippin someone off is giving them the finger (BAD)
