Does a tooth-coloured crown cost extra?

I'm going to have a root canal in two weeks, and it's not the procedure I'm worried about... It's the crown. When I was younger, I had two silver crowns and I HATED them. People were always asking me why I had silver in my mouth.

Do crowns that match tooth colour cost more than silver crowns?

  1. Most dentist prefer to  use tooth colored crowns. They are called PFMs or Porcelain fused to metal. They do cost more, because there is more work involved from the dentist's side, as well as the lab that makes it. Not to mention, the porcelain alone is more expensive that metal.

  2. Most dentists usually try to match the color of the crown to your teeth. I think the cost will depend on whether you have gold or e***a inside the crown. I don't think they use silver any more.

  3. In our office crowns are all the same price...(but we do not use any base metals, only gold or palladium High noble)

  4. I had a silver crown when I was a child. Fortunately, it was a baby tooth and I eventually lost it. I understand that silver crowns are mainly used as temporary crowns or on children who will lose those teeth. I suppose you can still get one if you insist on it. Yes, porcelain crowns do cost more but they look much better. All four of my upper front teeth have porcelain crowns and unless you can see the backs of the teeth, you wouldn't know. My daughter has a gold crown on one of her back teeth. The dentist wanted to use a porcelain crown but she wanted that gold one.
