Question:

Does a transrectal sonogram require sedation?

The doctor said it won't require sedation, then when the hospital called to tell her what time to be there, they said "don't eat or drink after midnight because you'll be sedated."

I looked up the procedure and while it doesn't look pleasant, it doesn't look painful either.

The dr is doing this to see if she has any tears that may need surgery due to poor muscle tone if that helps.

  1. I am not 100%, but I would hope so. I guess it depends on how far into the rectal vault the probe goes (a little bit, or a whole lot like a colonoscopy).

It could be they don't use sedation, but want you to fast in case they need to.

  2. I'm not a doctor but I have only heard of transrectal ultrasound for men to check on their prostate.  And I don't believe it requires sedation.  I had a colonoscopy which did require sedation but it was not painful at all.  And I was told not to eat anything by 6:00 pm the previous day. I've had 3 sonograms of my kidneys, liver, and gall bladder.  None of them required sedation and lasted about 45 minutes.  I hope this helps.
