Does a vane type hydraulic pump require a larger supply than a gear type hydraulic pump to do the same work?

  1. Either type of pump still has to displace the same quantity of oil to do the same job. So no. If both have identical pumping rates, the time taken will be the same too. I'd assume you are talking about hydraulics to raise/ lower an outboard or stern drive.
