  1. I presume this is the Edexcel qualification (the old BTEC) and a subject I have delivered for many years! The simple answer is yes. The reason is that the project element is divided into two, the "making" and the "communication" part. This involves delivering an oral presentation on your project and you really do need to attempt the project in order to claim the award. The Center Guidance notes state that a candidate must have made a meaningful attempt in order for a certificate to be issued (amongst other criteria).

None of my students have failed this element but I do know what an ordeal it can be for some. Many have approached me, seeking ways out that involved everything from bribery (a quantity of Viagra) to blackmail and eventually pleading. The only comfort I can offer you is that you are not alone and presentation skills are essential in the industry. Once you decide to have a go, the worst will be over.

Have a word with your pastoral tutor and see what suport is available - but be aware that this is one area where an extension can not be granted due to awarding body guidelines.

  2. I didn't have to do one.
