  1. Laura - No, it isn't! If you want a 46"-47" LCD, look at name brand quality, probably in this order: Sony Bravia, Toshiba Regza, Sharp Aquos, Samsung, LG. If you can't afford one of these, go for a smaller (37") screen or save up until you can. Stay away from those brand names you've never heard of before, or associate with appliances or cheap electronics, such as Vizio, Olevia, Element, Dynex, Insignia, RCA, Westinghouse, Sanyo and Polaroid, to name but a few.

If you're really want to learn, an easy place to start is with the HDTV article in the 3/08 Consumer Reports at your local library. Pay attention to the reliability section, as well as performance. And the part that helps you decide if you really need a 1080p TV.

  2. While I've not heard tons of bad about Westinghouse, I've never once heard a really great review of one.

If you're willing to drop $1200 on a TV that may be of dubious quality, why not spend say, $1500 or so on a TV that's going to be really great?  If you get the $1200 TV against your better judgment, you'll likely be unhappy with your purchase.

While it's even further out of your price range, the Samsung LN46A650 is a fantastic TV, at $1699.  There are other Samsung models at 46" that are around $1500, like the LN46A550.  Excellent quality TVs.  We're thrilled with our 650.
