Does a window mount air conditioner need to be mounted in a window?

I would like to use a window air conditioner to cool my cellar. My cellar doesn't have a window. I would place the unit on a table and run a drain hose to the floor drain. Will the unit work properly with the back side of the unit inside the room, not in the fresh outside air?

  1. you would be defeating your purpose as the heat exchanger would be discharging in the same space you are trying to cool

  2. No, this won't work.  All electrical devices actually produce heat.  You would be heating your basement, not cooling it.

Think of an A/C as a hot/cold air separator.  Thats not exactly how it works, but you can think of it that way.  The A/C puts cold air into the house and pushes hot air outside.  But it can only do that if the part that is supposed to be outside really is outside.

  3. there are types of air conditioner that have 2 parts. one is installes outside and one inside and they are connected with something through a hole. I don't kow if they sell them in US though ;) u can try to find out.

  4. yes it does   why do you think they call it a WINDOW ac

BUT they do make one that rolls on wheels and the exhaust goes out the window

  5. No all AC's work by removing heat. The back side of the AC is where it will reject the heat being removed from the room. If you can just cut a hole in the cellar wall and install it that way. Good luck.

  6. The back side would have to go outside, otherwise it would just be acting as a dehumidifier, It would also probably raise the temperature in your cellar.  On the inside, the heat exchanger removes heat from the air and transports it to the outside heat exchanger.  On the outside, you have all of the heat you removed from the inside, plus the heat generated by the fan motor, plus the heat generated by the compressor motor.

  7. no, the back side is where the heat goes out of the room. You would be doing nothing.
