Question:

Does accessory mode use gas?

I have a 2002 Ford Escape. I was wondering if when I turn the keys twice, without turning the engine on, does it use gas. When I turn it once the radio comes on. When I turn it twice the gas guage starts up, power windows work, the fans in the car turn on (where A/C is), and so on. Does this mode use gas.

  1. It only uses fuel if you start the motor... If you didn't start it, it isn't burning any fuel.

Be aware that having the key in the 'ON' position without the vehicle running can drain the battery a whole lot quicker than having the key in the 'ACC' position (the position where only your radio turns on). When the key in in the 'ON' position, everything is energized, with the large draws of power being the heat/AC fan motor (if turned on), fuel pump can cycle, ignition system is energized as well as the vehicle control module.

  2. Indirectly it does use gas. It takes energy from the battery, and the engine has to put that energy back into the battery next time it is running.

  3. The engine doesn't run on acc. mode, hence no gas consumption.
