Question:

Does all mail stand still on Sundays?

As far as I know, the US Postal Service doesn't deliver mail on Sundays, and no post offices are open on Sundays either. I was wondering if this means that no one works for USPS on Sundays? Do no mail get processed at all? Are all sorting centers closed as well?

I get that mailmen don't deliver on Sundays, but it seems odd that all mail processing would just stop on Sundays. Seems like a waste of time.

  1. Some sites are open, processing and moving mail.

  2. You are quite right, it does seem a waste of time. In terms of machine and resource usage we lose one day in seven so assuming no wastage we can only achieve 85.7 per cent utilisation. In fact if during the Monday to Saturday period businesses only work two shifts per day our overall utilisation for the week drops to 57.1per cent.

This is why large business such as steel manufacturers run their furnaces non stop.

In order to maximise utilisation of our resources and investment in plant and equipment we need to look seriously at all businesses being run on a 24 hour basis seven days per week. In the long term we should all reap the benefits of this.

  3. Mail can't stand - it does not have any legs!
