I really want to donate to the ASPCA, but my parents want to look into how much money actually goes towards the animals first. Does all of it? Most of it? Say I donated $25 a month. How much would actually go towards the animals? Please try to be as exact as you can. If you are not exact, just around the right answer. Please help!

  1. I would say you would be lucky if half of the money you donate actually goes to the animals.  Why not find a local rescue to donate to?  That way you will know for sure the money is going towards the animals.  go to www.petfinder.com to find rescues near you.

  2. The ASPCA is a decent charity, here's their charity rating..

They are definitely one of the better national groups. BUT, if you want your dollar to go the furthest, donate to your local shelter. The ASPCA takes in millions of dollars every year and is a limited admission shelter. Last year they adopted out 2,730 animals and neutered over 12,000 in low cost clinics. Great work, but, my local shelter where I grew up adopted out 7,000 a year with a lot less in donations.

Your $25 will buy 12 vaccines at your local shelter which has much lower employee costs then the ASPCA. The president of the ASPCA makes $400,000 a year. Some donations go to pay him. Your local animal shelter's director probably makes in the neighborhood of $40,000. Obviously, $25 at your local shelter has the ability to stretch a lot further.

  3. I have donated at least $100 a year for the past 5 years & while I don't know exactly how much goes to the animals, the ASPCA is a great organization. All donations (less overhead expenses) seems to benefit the animals & to bring awareness to animal cruelty in this country, without all of the over-the-top bs (like PETA, which just goes way too far IMO). It think it is a great charity & good money, well spent if you can spare it!

  4. if you donate to a LOCAL shelter.. one where you can go see the animals - chances are more of your money will go directly to the animals themself.

I donate to the spay/neuter funds!

and donated directly to my LOCAL SPCA.

I am sure you have a local charity in your area..

  5. I would think that it is safe to assume that all of your money goes in to the care of the animals, both directly and indirectly.

Money doesn't just pay for medicines and food.  It costs money to pay the rent/mortgage of the facility housing the animals, electricity, the vehicles, the gas to put in the vehicles, the doctors, staff and officers, the phone bills- the list goes on and on.

Don't decide not to donate thinking that someone is making a huge profit off of the donations coming in.

It is most admirable of you to considering donating to any cause that helps animals.  Kudos!
