  1. I live in Pennsylvania (US) and I can tell whether someone is from my valley, the next valley up, on the mountain, or from the coal region.

Every region of this country has a different accent.  Boston accents are different from the rest of New England.  There was a movie a few years ago where everyone was supposed to have a Philadelphia accent.  Everyone in the movie actually had a Brooklyn accent.  Most of the country never noticed.  But people in Philadelphia and Brooklyn certainly took notice.  Even different regions of the south have slightly different accents.  Different regions of Canada also have different accents.  Hearing the accents from the Canadian province of Newfoundland might be one of the worst sounds I've ever heard.

I can't say for sure about Australia, but I bet it's the same.

  2. Yeah, certain cities have their own accents, like Boston or Chicago.  If you go to Youtube and type in "da bears" and "SNL" you should see a skit or two from saturday night live where you can hear an example of Chicago accents (even though they're exaggerated).  And for a Boston accent, hate to suggest SNL again, but if you typed in Jimmy Fallon and Boston, I'm sure his skit would come up where you can hear a pretty bad example of the Boston accent.  Or you could watch movies like Good Will Hunting for some bad Boston accents.

Of course you have to know the NY accent from movies and stuff. It's kind of lazy speech, and being from NY I know the accents change depending on what part of NY you are from.  People from upstate NY start to have a bit of a midwestern accent, people from Brooklyn sound different than people from Queens.  Long Island's accent is like "tawk" and "lawng" instead of "talk" or "long".. the W sound is very prevalent where vowels are.

  3. I don't have any links but there are many different regional accents in the US.

    Southern drawl.

    New York.

    Boston

    Minnesota

"normal" (that's me, by the way--midwest girl)--actually that's true.  All the operators used to be in Omaha, Nebraska because of the lack of accent of people who lived in the midwest.

Canada also has different accents--the REALLY different accent up there are the Newfies (Newfoundland).  It's extremely difficult to understand what they're saying.
