I have a good family and a good job in Kabul, Afghanistan. Being away from my family for 2 years have been my nightmares recently. At the other hand, a prestigious scholarship for a Master's degree from US is also tempting. What should I do ?

  1. Greatly depends on what your perception is about a job. A job can be great from ones point of view but not as good from the others point of view. I spent years away from my family until last year when I was recieving my education and was away until I got my bachelors degree. Keep in mind, with a good degree from a well reputed university in a developed country is not only good for you, your family but helps your country that is suffering alot.

  2. As long as you have a good job, do what you want. If you want to continue your education, go for it. It is never a bad thing to continue with school.

  3. Weigh the benefits and see if gaining them is worth their opportunity cost. What do you have to gain from going to the US and at what cost?

  4. Salaam Aleikum,

    Improve your education.

A good education is the base of a good  and succesful life and I am not only speaking salary wise. You'll be more respected, feel fullfilled and happier if you know that you will be able to take excellent care of your wife and children in the long term.

If you can have a scholarship, that's just perfect.

When you improve your education, you'll get a much better job, better pay, better social status and this will positively influence you family life. Now, you have to decide if you can stay away from home and your family and...- your culture because this is also very important -  and, let's not forget,  remain faithful to your wife.  I don't think that your family will be allowed to follow you during those 2 years but, InshAllah, maybe they can come and visit you or you can just go back home during the Summer holidays. It won't seem too long then.

You'll be able, in the future, to help your children in their studies and be better equipped to counsel and advise them also. They'll feed the need to also have a better education when they see their Dad doing great professionally.

Also, with a degree you may be able to work abroad, in different countries, if you wish to do so. US degrees are quite appreciated all over the world.

I wish you all the best.
