  1. In terms of your licence, you are able to drive in New Zealand provided a) your licence is valid at home and b) it is written in English.

If you have a current overseas licence or International Driving Permit (IDP), you are entitled to drive in New Zealand (NZ) for up to 12 months before being required to convert your licence to a NZ licence.

You are required to carry your original licence with you at all times when driving. This licence will allow you to drive vehicles of equivalent classes to those listed on your licence.  If your licence is not produced in English, a translation must be provided from the licence issuing authority, an embassy, high commission, consulate or an approved NZ translation service.

Attached are links to Land Transport NZ factsheets regarding approved licence translators and information on driver licence classes in NZ.

Please see the following links that contain additional information about driving in NZ, converting to a NZ driver licence (including a list of exempt countries), and what's different about driving in NZ.

  2. No you are ok to drive as long as you have a current and valid overseas driver licence.  This means that your licence allows you to legally drive in your own country. If you are disqualified from driving or your licence is currently suspended, expired or revoked, then you are not allowed to drive in New Zealand

  3. Nope your good to go. ENJOY

  4. No, you can use your aussie license so long as you arent there for more than 3 months then you will need to transfer your license to NZ you cant be on your P plates though. NZ road rules are pretty much exactly the same aside from one right hand turn rule

  5. no you don't need an international license - if you have a full aussie license you can drive in NZ for up to a year and you can hire a car with it.

Most of the rules are the same, but we do have a funny give way rule that will take some getting used to.

  6. no,  not unless you are living there permanently
