  2. Yes, an HDMI cable allows superior carriage (and therefore reproduction) of the HDTV signal.

  3. To get a HD quality signal to your HDTV you have to use either a HDMI cable or component video cables.

All the other outputs of your HD cable box are down converted to plain old 480i analog quality.

Composite (red, yellow, white) & s-video cables are only used for 480i analog signals.

  4. HDMI is supposed to allow you to watch and listen to an uncompressed digital signal from HD sources.  The best cable for HD viewing. If you say you are getting a picture that is the same as analog, check the station.  Having an HDTV doesn't mean all the stations will look like Hi-def. The signal that is sent is still analog converted to digital passed through to your box to your set.  Most HDTV's do a good job at interlacing the signal to give you a better pic than a regular analog 480i signal, but it's still not HD.

If your channel is a HD channel, you might want to check the wiring outside your home.  Check for frays, cuts, erosion (rust) on connections.  This will downgrade the signal significantly.  You might have a faulty box, too. Just another possibility.  Also, check the settings on the box to see if the output settings have been changed to ouptut the signal in 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i.  The cable box should have this option.

And lastly, if you have too many people hooked up to the same source as you to receive your cable,  this might affect your signal as well.

  5. The HDTV box should have 2 separate channel numbers for ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.  One is the standard def version, one is the HD version.

Wait until after 8 pm when the shows are all in HD. Flip between the standard def and HD version of CBS.

The differenced should be obvious. If not - call the CATV tech support and they will help you troubleshoot the problem.

  6. It sounds like you have an HD box but do not have it hooked up correctly to receive HD signals. If you have the old coax cable still hooked into the tv from the cable box then you are not getting HD. You  need an HDMI cable or a component cable hooked from your cable box to your tv in order to receive HD signals.
