Does an HP M425 digital camera work only with a particular battery like Alkaline or NiMh w/ specific amphere?

I just got an HP M425 digital camera from a friend. He thinks it is faulty coz it wont turn on with ordinary AA batteries. He bought it second hand from a boot sale. Will it work if I use Alkaline or NiMh batteries or is it really broken. I read from the internet that these types of batteries are compatible with this camera. I just don't want to waste money buying special types of batteries just to find out it wont work coz the camera is really faulty.

If it doesn't even turn on with the ordinary AA batteries then there is something wrong with the camera.  "Regular" batteries would die quickly, but if fresh batteries do not even turn on the camera, it is dead.
