  1. Some of the cost is deferred by donations

  2. It depends on the seminary. Some dioceses subsidize seminarians who are studying for the priesthood for that diocese. The one where have where I live, the seminarians pay on a sliding scale. If they have a lot of money (or their families do), they might pay for the whole thing. If they have next to nothing, they are given grants and scholarships. One of our fine priests died last May, and he left the seminary a gift annunity that has enough $$$ in it so that the interest will pay all the tuition for one seminarian every year for as long as that seminary exists. And that's just one out of more than 100 scholarships we have (of varying sizes, obviously). Last year, these funds paid out more than $160,000 to support our seminarians.

However, I hear that it is different in other dioceses. Sometimes the men have to pay everything themselves and hold down part-time jobs to pay for their schooling. Their bishops should work on this problem, as vocations to the priesthood are very, very important.

  3. No idea.
