Question:

Does an electric weed eater use a lot of energy?

I live in a duplex and my neighbor uses my power socket outside the house to power his weed eater and take care of two duplexes without my permission. I was wondering how much this will drive up my electrict bill and if I should tell him to stop. He uses it once every 2 weeks for about 2 hours as he is an old man.

Help me know how much energy it uses up.

  1. No they only pull about 3 1/2 amps.  Your sweeper will pull about 12 amps.  He is costing you about $2.00.

  2. Without seeing the label on the tool, I don't know for sure, but most of those things probably have a 1/4 horsepower motor in them.   Based on average efficiency, that probably uses 250 to 300 watts.

For 2 hours that would be 0.6 Kilowatt hours.   What does your electric cost per KwH, maybe 25 to 30 cents?    0.6 x 30 = 18 cents.

I say let the old guy have his fun!

  3. At most, he is using about 1 kwh every two weeks. A kwh costs you between 8 and 15 cents, depending on where you live.  Let the old man keep himself happy, and it will come back to you.
