  1. MRS LUCKY - Inmates do not have EVERY RIGHT to write someone.  The "privileges" of inmates can be controlled for many reasons, such as threatening public officials, threatening witnesses and etc.  As for what inmates do write - 90% is begging for money from family and naive women.  They will tell such horrible stories about the guards extorting them for money or other inmates are pressuring them to pay for this or that, claiming they will be killed, raped, beaten, etc if they don't pay up.  It's disgusting the things they tell their own mothers in order to get more and more money.  These funds are usually used to purchase drugs and prison made booze.  Very little is used to pay extortion since prison authorities can control the extortion situation.

As for Michelle T I have to agree - after 27 years working Federal Prisons - the only real affect the mail has for inmates is to keep them in contact with the scum who supported them while they committed their crimes in the first place.  This support system is composed of family, friends and other criminals.  If these people would stop supporting them with money and "love"; the "gangsta" myth would die out.  Inmates should be going home and telling everyone "PRISON is not the place for you."  Instead they go home and brag how they got over on the man and did drugs and drank hooch all the time like it was okay to be in prison.  Look at Rap stars - they glorify being a thug like it was something to brag about....  pull your head out!!!   Being a thug is anti-social!

  2. yes they do unless they are in seclusion for disciplinary reason

  3. Yes, though the mail is usually monitored. (not private) If threatening or unwanted mail is received from an inmate, notify the prison authorities. His mail privileges may get revoked.

  4. Yes... but if you ask me.. they should not be aloud to write... they should be working there A.s.s off. cleaning the enviroment..

  5. Get on the internet and read about the ruling, on paper and pencil.(son of sam law ) you be amaze.

  6. Yes they do.

  7. Of course.  Most can buy it through canteen.  Even those with no money are given postcards to write on.

  8. In the jail I work in we provide pencils and two small postcards per week to inmates who don't have any money.  If an inmate has money he/she is required to purchase their own paper, envelope and postage.  We do provide pencils to everyone, but they are those little golf pencils and they are only allowed to have two on them at any time.

  9. What a ridiculous answer Michelle T

Inmaites have every right to write their loved ones.!

Yes,county jails usually provide pencils and paper but they're(the inmaites) are required to purchase envelopes.

Now prisions,The inmaites much purchase pencil, paper, and envelopes.

Some inmaites in High security situation cannont have access to phone calls or letters. Or If they're in SEG.

    Good Luck!

  10. Yes, provided they have the funds in their account to purchase it.  Some jails do permit indigent inmates paper, pencils, envelopes, and postage, but not all.  I'd have to know the jurisdiction you mean to be more specific.
