Since an appraisal is going to tell you how much it is worth, if they do it in store, whose to say they aren't going to tell you it's more than it's worth? And if it's against the law to lie, then why does it even matter where you buy your ring?

Do they let you get an outside appraisal for the ring?

What if you buy the ring and you find one somewhere else for a lot cheaper? Then what? Can you return it?

  1. Typically all rings are appraised for more.  That way, when you get it insured and you should happen to lose it or a stone falls out, it will be replaced with no problem or you will get more back.  The best bet, is to shop around, if you want the cheapest ring.

  2. I think you can return the ring, just check the return policy.

In terms of appraisal I really couldn't tell you how likely it is to be appraised for less that you paid.  The depends on where you buy it (and how much a a ridiculous mark up they put on it).  You can always negotiate them down if you know what you are doing.

Most chain and large jewelers have such a huge mark-up on jewelry that there is tons of room to haggle the price down.  But there are a lot of online jewelry places that just have great deals (no need to haggle).

Try bluenile.com.  I recommend it to everyone.  They have near-wholesale prices on their diamonds and great customer service.  People are always commenting that their engagement rings they bought at bluenile.com are appraised for MORE than they paid.

    Good Luck!
