  1. NYC has the largest subway system in the U.S., with 229 miles of route length.

The next biggest would be the Washington Metro with 103.6 miles.

The next biggest after that would be the Chicago El at 103.2 miles.

The reason why NYC's system is so extensive is because Manhattan is an island, completely surrounded by water, which means motor traffic is always bottlenecked at the major crossings (7 major bridges and 4 tunnels), so the population of NYC depends a lot more heavily on mass transit to commute into Manhattan (at least 6 million subway riders per weekday).

No other means of mass transportation is more suited to New York City's island geography than the subway.

  2. LA, Chicago one should be pretty good

DTErob : Open your eyes, can take a look at Japan rail system and then comment on the NYC one, no ones beat Japanese on track system

  3. Stop smoking crack, if u broke up the ny boroughs and made them individual cities americas biggest cities would go something like this #1 Manhattan #2 Los Angelas #3 Queens #4 CHicago #5 Brooklyn

  4. No, not at all.  Our subway system is the one of the largest in the world.  Ours is the only one in the US that really can take you anywhere.  Others' are too small and more of an afterthought.

  5. No one even come close to NYC Subway system. It's like a tiger where others are like cats!

  6. Los Angeles used to - it was above ground (earthquakes you know) streetcars - but it ranged much farther than the NYC system - it's why Los Angeles is so large and spread out. L.A. once had the largest electric trolley system in the U.S., with 6,000 trains running on 144 routes in four counties.

The NY subway only went underground in the first place due to the rich not liking street cars/trains and the dirt they generated.

Chicago and Boston have excellent systems, as does Portland (which is building and growing faster and greener than NYC's)

  7. My friend, there are several that come close to New York.

    -Boston

    -LA

    -San Francisco

    -Chicago

    -DC

    -Atlanta

    Good luck
