JOHANNESBURG, March 3, 2008 (AFP) - Thirty-nine people died between Sunday and Monday on South Africa's roads in four separate road accidents in Southeastern Province, the police and officials said.

A pile-up in Kwa-Zulu Natal province on Monday morning claimed 11 lives when a pick-up truck lost control and spun into oncoming traffic in Hillcrest, outside Durban city, Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu told AFP.

'It was a bakkie (truck) and two cars involved in the accident. The driver lost control and went through the centre of the freeway ... colliding head on with a Volkswagen car,' provincial transport spokesman Rajen Chinaboo had earlier said on Monday.

A car travelling behind the Volkswagen crashed into it.

Fifteen people died in another accident in Dundee town while three others died in a third accident near Mtubatuba in the province, Mngomezulu said.

On Sunday 10 people, including eight football players, were killed in the Eastern Cape in a collision between a minibus taxi and a truck.

'The soccer players were in the minibus taxi heading home. Ten died, three from the bakkie and seven from the taxi,' police spokesman Tshepo Machaea told AFP.
