  1. You can get wax and a leash at just about any surf shop in LA.  It doesn't have to be a good surf shop.  Everyone should carry those items on a daily basis.

If it's your first time putting wax on the board, MAKE SURE you buy base coat and top coat.  You'll want to spend some time putting a nice even layer of basecoat on first.  Completely cover the board where you'll be applying the wax (no holes).  It will really make a difference.  The basecoat helps the wax stay on your board longer.  It won't get rubbed off as easily, and it won't get all over your board shorts.

Then, apply probably Cool or Cold water wax in circular motions.  After a while (shouldn't take as long as the base coat) it will build up into little bumps.

I usually strip my boards a couple times a year and start over with a completely new wax job.  Just to keep things nice, even, and clean.

I like Sticky Bumps, bus s*x Wax is also a popular brand.

The leash, just make sure it's the right length.  You don't want it too long or too short.  Bring your board in with you and ask the workers to find a good one for your board.

Have fun surfing this weekend!  And watch out for those Labor Day crowds. :)
