you could start by practicing chords then chord progression after learning chord progression try learning power chords. Then learn to improvise.

Ok i really must suggest you get some kind of lessons first be it teacher or book ( some good and inexpensive books are the CVLS guitar books at www.cvls.com they books come with an audio cd so that you can hear if what  you're playing is right 15 bucks a book and they have a great learners system to take you from begineer to expert). Now if you still want to learn with just internet material(which i wouldn't recommend) then go to www.freeguitarvideos.com they have lesson for begineers and on the different genres of music look at there lessons on reading tabs first(these are also the good people from cvls so you know that you're getting good stuff) they give you free videos and the tabs(easy way guitarist read music) for free. Next learn your chords and scales at www.chordbook.com . I recommend you learn you  A,D,E  chords in the open postion first then learn your G,D,C chords also in the first postion once your comfortable with that learn your  barre chord. Now with scales i suggest you learn your major and minor pentatonic scales (preferably in the key of A) in the box postion. Once you straight with the basics go to www.ultimate-guitar.com  and look up the tabs to your favorite songs (but try to stick to the easier songs or else you might become discouraged)
