You have to put some money in an account with a trading firm.  You can trade with play money to learn how by going onto Fidelity or Merrill Lynch.

In order to trade shares, you will need an account at a brokerage firm.  There are two different types of brokers: full-service and discount.  Full-service brokers provide advice, but they are much more expensive than discount brokers.  On the other hand, discount brokers are cheaper but you have to make your own decisions.

I currently use Firstrade ( http://www.firstrade.com/ ).  They are much cheaper than big name brokers such as Etrade, Ameritrade, and Schwab.  I've used them for years and I've had no problems so far.  I would definitely recommend them to you.

you can learn how to trade and study companies by going to http://www.investopedia.com I am learning from there. they have book you could read and understand more about trading

Use an online brokerage firm that has good beginner qualitys {like tutorials or easy to understand set up}, i use zecco, better then schwab, etrade, etc. they are the only ones with free stock trades, no minumums..
