For the past two weeks ive been using an extreme western grip on my forehand which feels uncomfortable at times but when it works I get alot of spin and move people around, but its not as powerful as my former grip but I make too many errors with a semi-western grip. Does anybody use the full western gripn and how do they find it???

  1. Nadal's grip is extreme, I thought he used an Eastern grip. Either way its the opposite side of Continental and its fine for clay, but very hard on you. He has the strength to pull it off, obviously.

  2. i sometimes switches from semi-western to full-western. that is when i have low ball and i wish to "dip" my shot just across the net, provided my opponent cannot reach the ball. i start by holding the racquet from the right side (i'm a right-hander). notice if i turn the racquet until the frame points to 12 and 6 o'clock (stringbed to 9 and 3 o'clock), the grip would look like a backhand grip (continental and to the left one bevel). it almost look like i could place my thumb on the widest bevel. i start the back swing early, stringbed facing the ground, and as i swing forward, i time the impact until the ball at about 15 inches high from the ground, about one feet to my right and to the front. at impact, my stringbed should be brushing the upper portion of the ball. i swung the racquet in a quick (but timed) wiper movement. it looks like the brushing effect lifts the ball upward and across the net. it then quickly drops to the ground just behind the net. i follow-through until my racquet ends over my left shoulder. my hitting surface (stringbed) ends up facing the side fence. hope it helps :)

  3. Nadal uses the westen grip. It is really hard to do, but as you have probably seen it puts a ton of spin on the ball. I use the semi-western it isn't as hard to use and you still get some spin. Talk to your pro, he/she can help you to find the right grip.

  4. I think that only Nadal and Andreev are the top players who use that grip... nowadays... but I think that you should use the grip that you are comfortable with... and if you make a mess, you can't blame other people for it... just your coach...
