  1. when you first start you should find the center, meaning wherever the place is that it does not lean to the side and mark with a piece of tape. You also need to remember to stretch before doing you start training, this can prevent any muscles being torn and reduce putting strain in your body.

  2. Make sure you find a good instructor. Unfortunatly for you most traditional styles do not teach weapons until higher levels, not right from the start.

You have to learn what you are doing empty hand first, in order to effectivly use a weapon.

  3. Base ball swing is so cool.

  4. Hi there

First and foremost. Find a good school. There are many martial arts that train in the BO but most of them will require you to learn the unarmed techniques first as any weapon is just an extension of yourself.

Lean the basics first before you take on any forms. Learn how to hold the thing (Mochkai) and learn the basic stances, blocks and strikes. Once you have mastered these you can then start to tackle the kata and Bo Furi (spinning techniques).

One point that's not been mentioned is there are many types of Bo's available so make sure you are using one thats associated with the art your practising.

All weapons should have the correct weight and balance for the practitioner who's using them. It is true that a good martial artist should be able to use anything at their disposal but for training purposes make sure your equipment speaks to you!

All weapons have a soul that should connect to their owner. The right Bo will just speak to you when you hold it and more importantly when you use it.

When it feels right then it's the right BO for you. ;-)

    Best wishes

I never saw them before but look interesting.

  6. don't mess around, find a teacher.

  7. Make sure that your instructor teaches you all of the basics first rather than teaching you a form directly. Just like any kata, you shouldn't work on it unless you can do each individual strike by itself proficiently as well the appropriate stances.

Work with a heavy bo when learning your basics. It will allow you to do proper form slowly and you can drill bo to bo striking. As you progress, you can try out different types of staffs for the specific type of training you want to achieve.

There are a ton of videos for working the bo. It all depends on what your goal is. Are you into combat training, traditional katas, or creative and extreme forms? First I suggest that you have your instructor teach you the traditional basics and forms, then move into specific types as you develop your skills.
