  1. I don't know from personal experience, but if you're arriving with unrestricted permanent residency, you're immediately eligible for Medicare, so I believe you would be covered by the system.



    All treatment in public hospitals is covered, but GP and specialist visits are only covered for 85 per cent of the scheduled fee. Some (not many) GPs bulk bill and you pay nothing for them, but for non bulk billing GPs and the vast majority of specialists, there will be some charge. There is also a minimum charge for all prescription pharmaceuticals.

    Make visiting your local Medicare office one of your first tasks upon arrival and they'll explain everything to you.


  2. I agree with the other writer, and call Centrelink when you get here, if you are a permanent resident then you shouldn't have any problems.  You will need your Medicare Card Quickly!  Every doctor will ask you for it.
