  1. The person who said it, said it off the cuff.  The cover was premeditated.  The issue was dead, and the editor did it to keep it going.  Also, the editor did not run this by the editor-in-chief.  That's a no no.  Add in that the editor-in-chief is the owner of the magazine.

Also, about that freedom of speech.  Read the Constitution.  It doesn't mean you can say whatever you want.  It means only that you can speak out against the GOVERNMENT without retribution.  That's all.

  2. he should have been taken outback and lynched or at least killed why do people try to take basic freedoms so far i am sure that the good old boys who buy the book got some good memories back from the picture so what next make a comment about barry bonds being dropped on his head as a baby and espn mag runs a picture of a baby with a fractured skull no you can't do any stupid thing you want to do because you can he will get work editing the kkk newsletter

  3. What is next to be outlawed by the "PC" police ?

How about whip,we have several in congress? We don't wear much cotton so that would be a good one too.  There are many words and gestures that might offend, are we to guard every word we speak and every gesture we make even if there is no intent to offend?

I think it is crazy to fire someone and suspending is just as crazy.

  4. the man should have not been fired give him a raise. it is now 2008. it's about time people can say a joke, put a picture on a peice of paper without the world going nuts.

  5. It proves to me that the Managing Editor and the Publisher of Golf Week are spineless and have no integrity what so ever. Do you think for 1 minute that the graphics editor released that cover without their knowledge or consent? I hope the graphics editor finds work again soon and I hope that people cancel their subscriptions to Golf Week (as I have already done).

  6. The editor used the cover of the magazine to further inflame the issue. His conduct as editor should be beyond reproach, but what he did was worse that what she said. This was because of how it was used not what was done or said. The editor received exactly was he deserved.

  7. It is crazy.

Forgetting Tiger Woods for a second, golf is overwhelmingly white in both the professional and amateur spheres. Read any golf mag, do you see any images or ads that target anyone except the 35-60 year old white male (again, forgetting Tiger). Go to driving ranges and courses. Who do you see? I see lots of Asians also but I live in the New York City area.

I'm not saying that golf, the PGA or anything or anyone associated with the sport is racist. There are non-white amateur players, certainly, but they're a small minority in the sport. What I'm saying is that the racial makeup of the sport (white) makes people very reluctant to talk about racial issues and Golfweek crossed the invisible line. With the sport as a whole wanting the whole comment mess to quietly fade away, the Golfweek editor showed horrible timing by running that cover image.

However, maybe it's time that racial issues in golf are talked about and maybe that's what he was trying to do, although the interview with him showed that he was somewhat caught up in the hectic editorial cycle and didn't realize what he was approving.

Either way, he shouldn't have been fired. He didn't start the whole mess, he was just trying to help his magazine comment on it.

  8. played out....who cares.....in the words of Obi Wan Kenobi, "Move Along....Move Along"

  9. Nope...not crazy.

Listen, folks, there is a more salient point here:

When you are in businees, like TGC, GOLF magazine, GolfDigest, ESPN, etc., the #1 priority is to make money and keep your regard with your customers in the highest standing.

Any action a business takes which alienates any pct. of its clientel is self-defeating and harmful to your bottom line.

THIS is why people are making the decisions they're making.

  10. She made a SPONTANEOUS remark, the cover was PLANNED.  Premeditation makes anything a worse offense.

  11. Golfweek clearly was trying to take on an issue that they have no credibility. Even if the editor was trying to point out that there are fewer minorities in Golf and that the comments were not inncocent but prevasive in the Golf world --- he bull it.

Tiger Woods should npt let any of this phase him.. Stay positive my man and don't let thme try to change the course of history by putting little words in the atmosphere to shift your emotional..Let no negative entrophy into your system.

  12. No.  What was said was insensitive, to put a noose on the cover of a global magazine was stupid!  Having already seen the backlash on the original comment, he showed serious poor judgement and I also think his staff should have stood up and said the photo should not have been used.

  13. I think its a big joke and he shouldn't have gotten fired.

  14. no, I think it was appropriate.   sheesh.

  15. I do. But it is consistent with the fascist control of speech we know exists. There are certain things that someone decides are politically incorrect to say in this supposed country with free speech.   Now, for some strange reason -even though the noose was used for centuries on non Blacks, it is a symbol of black oppression. Who knew? Evidently not the editor.

  16. He deserved to be fired. and Kelly needed to be fired also. We forget, the issue didn't HAVE to be racist. An employer can fire someone for cause,    -  or for no reason at all. Same with employees....you can leave your job giving no reason at all.

    Get over it

    stop being jealous!
