  2. Very few people have "true" sciatica.  Most often the pain one experiences is caused by an overly tight piriformis muscle, which is located inside the pelvic girdle.

How can you tell the difference, as the location is the same, and to most people, the pain appears to be the same?  True sciatic will make you unable to walk because the severity level is through the roof!  It will also not go away until the cause (usually a pinched nerve in the lumbar spine) is corrected.  Often, pregnant women experience sciatica because of the weight of the baby on their pelvis and the outward rotation of the pelvis causes pressure on the lower lumbar spinal cord, pinching nerves.  This is corrected by having the baby!  For those that aren't pregnant, a chiropractor or a D.O. can manipulate the spine and fix this problem with just a few adjustments.

An overly tight piriformis hurts some of the time, but won't keep you from walking.  The pain severity varies throughout the day.  Rest will make it get better and you will often have pain-free days.  Often post-partum women will have piriformis pain because their pelivs hasn't rotated back into place and they carry too much "baby weight", causing stress and tightening on this muscle.  A tight piriformis can be properly stretched by a massage therapist (preferably a sports-trained MT) or a chiropractor that specializes in kineseology.

  3. Two raquetballs or tennis balls in a sock. Put them agaist the wall and lay on them. Press them all along your hips and butt cheeks. If you find a place that hurts really really bad, then stop and hold it for fifteen seconds. It will hurt but then it will feel better. I do it to myself all the time. Good luck!
