  1. trail rides, breezes (gallops) are always fun. they sound like they would make a horse fitter(:

  2. trails with hills up or down it build a lot of muscle.

  3. Lots and lots of trotting. Long trotting and trotting up hills will both make your horse fitter and build muscle. Don't try parrelli, it is horrible. Tons of horses are ruined, don't respect people, have tons of problems, and need retrained because people "do parrelli" with their horses. It is truely just a waste of money and time. I know that some people will disagree with that, but really if you are a serious rider and show horses you don't do parrelli.

  4. You should check out Parelli Natural Horsemanship! The things you teach your horse get him mentally, emotionally, and physically fit. I've never had a more fit horse in all three ways!

  5. Hi,

To get them fit. The best thing is to trot ( as it is much harder work then cantering) and do a lot of it. As he is 4 years old you want to take him slowly and work up the work load over a period of time. troting up hills is even better!

  6. What i do with my QH to get her back in shape for shows and such is i start with an easy work out such as walking, joging, extended trot, and loping both directions for about 10 minutes then over time i make the work out longer and harder (such as doing the serpentine, lead changes and some circles) things that get her brain going as well as her body.

then fun for both of us that gets her to build muscle is free lunging in a big arena. some horse dont like it but mine does. she goes crazy and bucks and has a blast. its also so funny to watch.

trail rides with running spots are also really fun and are a good exercise. gets their heart rate up and stuff.

things i stay away from are lunging on a line for more then a few minutes. i only lung when i want to get my horse warmed up and i stop when she starts listening really well to my voice commands and moves more freely. no horse wants to go in circles for like half an hour so if you do ever have to lung on a line mix it up. do alot of transitions and flip directions.
