Scottish: habitational name from a place in Glasgow, so called from Middle English provend, prebend ‘land providing revenue for a holder of religious office’ (Old French probende, prebende, Late Latin praebenda ‘supplies’, ‘things to be supplied’). The place was name for a prebendary of Barlanark, a canon of Glasgow cathedral.
