between shooting with digital SLR and shooting with a 35mm SLR, ie: the way the digital picks up light.

  1. Digital is more a kin to slides, chromes, transparencies...whatever you wish to call them. They expose the same way.

  2. Exposure is more critical with digital since it doesn't yet have the latitude of film. Perki88 is correct in comparing it to slide film.

These books may be of help:

"The Digital Photographer's Guide to Exposure" by Peter Cope

"Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs With A Film or Digital Camera" by Bryan Peterson

"Hands-On Digital Photography" by George Schaub

"How Digital Photography Works, Second Edition" by Ron White

I am also a firm believer in reading photography magazines. My personal favorite is Shutterbug.
