  1. for a rip in the shrit? or to make a decoration?

to fix a rip in the shirt, cut the matching fabric a little larger than the hole. turn in the edges of the hole and press, lay the patch on the back, pin in place and stitch by slip stitch the opening. Then turn under the edges of the patch on the back and slip stitch it in place.

to make a decoration, like a heart, cut the pattern for the decorative patch out of paper, making it half inch larger than the intended size. Turn under edges, slip stitch or do decorative embroidery stitches around the edges to hold it in place.

  2. Are you talking about patches like military unit patches?

These are embroidered so you need to buy some heavy fabric and lots of colors of threads and do it by hand or buy a sewing machine that has some some kind of free movement option to steer the zig-zag stitch to make the picture (or buy an embroidery sewing machine that makes changing colors much easier but costs $1500 and up.

  3. If you want an embroidered patch, bring the finished design to a commercial embroider (check in the phone book) and ask for an estimate -- there will be a charge for digitizing, a charge for the number of color changes, and a charge for the number of stitches in the design, as well as a charge for sewing out 4 copies.    It'll actually probably be fairly reasonable.

If a printed patch will do, there are "print on fabric" sheets available that will allow you to make a colored design on your computer and then use an inkjet printer to print the design directly on fabric.  Soak it in fixative and then sew it on or use fusible web.

Or you could silkscreen or hand embroider the patch.
