In December the shops in Edinburgh will be open on Sunday.

That's not your problem, your problem is the trains, on Sunday the trains from and to Dunfermline are  at 1134am( believe me this one is the best one to get, it only takes 45 minutes to get to Edinburgh, the others ones are 1hour+, and on a Sunday the return is just as awful.

Your best bet is getting the bus, they are more frequent and on a Sunday are quicker.
